The Reading Workshop Model
Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes
•Each Reading Workshop session will begin with a mini lesson that lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. Each mini lesson will focus on a reading strategy. There may be times where a strategy will be studied over the course of several days, in which case the mini lessons that week will be related to that strategy.
Independent Reading: 35-40 Minutes
•Read Independently/Practice skill from mini-lesson
•Write in Reader's Notebook
•Small Group Instruction: A small group of students read a book together with Miss Gemmell
•Conferring With Students: I will meet with individuals or small groups to practice a reading strategy and/or to assess student progress
Sharing: 5-10 Minutes
During this time the class might:
•Meet as a whole group to refer back to the mini-lesson and think further
•Meet together to think about and respond to questions such as: What did you learn about reading today? What did you learn about yourself as a reader?
•Meet in small groups to have a quick chat about how the reading is going

The Writing Workshop Model
•Writing Workshop creates an environment where students can acquire writing skills, along with fluency, confidence, and the desire to see themselves as writers.
•A block of time during the day that is devoted primarily to writing.
•During writer's workshop, I model a skill or strategy in a mini-lesson followed by independent writing. While students are writing, I will be conferencing with specific students.
•Students have their own decorated writers notebooks that will serve as seeds for creating their own stories!
